Online Psychologist

True North Psychology has qualified clinicians that offer online psychologist appointments (or telehealth) via Zoom, helping you access excellent care from the comfort and privacy of your home.

Seeing an online psychologist is simple and effective.

Looking for a flexible and convenient way to access mental health support?

Whether you’re managing anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, or simply need support through life’s challenges, online psychology through True North Psychology may be the right fit for you.

Can psychologists do telehealth?

Yes — all our psychologists can provide telehealth (online) appointments. Telehealth has become a standard and widely accepted way to deliver psychological care. Our psychologists are experienced in working via secure video platforms like Zoom, offering the same evidence-based therapy approaches you would receive in a face-to-face session.

What are the benefits of an online psychologist?

Many people prefer to choose an online psychologist. This may be because of:

  • Greater convenience and flexibility: Online sessions remove travel time and waiting rooms. You can attend from home or another private space, making it easier to fit therapy into work, parenting, study commitments or shift schedules.

  • Access to the right psychologist for you: Telehealth allows you to choose a psychologist based on experience, approach, and personality fit — not just proximity to Brisbane or your local area. This is helpful if you’re seeking support for specific concerns such as anxiety, trauma, personality disorders, neurodiversity, or relationship difficulties.

  • Comfort of your own environment: Many people feel more relaxed speaking from a familiar space. Being at home can reduce anxiety about appointments and help you open up more comfortably during sessions.

  • Improved accessibility: Online psychology removes barriers related to distance, transport, or mobility challenges. It can also make attending sessions more consistent during busy or stressful periods.

  • Continuity of care: Telehealth makes it possible to continue with your psychologist if you move, travel for work, or need to isolate due to illness — supporting steady progress without disruption.

We recommend finding a quiet, private space with a reliable internet connection so you can feel comfortable and focused during your session.

Your call may be rescheduled if you are driving or in a public area.

How are online psychology appointments delivered?

Online psychology sessions are typically delivered via Zoom or our practice management software, using a private and secure video link. Once your appointment is confirmed, you’ll receive an email with a link and instructions on how to join the video call. On the day of your session, simply click the link and join the session from your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Are online psychology sessions covered by Medicare?

Yes — online psychologist sessions are eligible for Medicare rebates if you have a current Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP.  This includes up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year, just like in-person appointments. We’ll process your Medicare rebate on your behalf after we process your payment, making it easy and stress-free.

Can I see a psychologist online without a referral from my GP?

Absolutely. You can choose to see a psychologist online as a private client without a GP referral or Mental Health Care Plan. However, without a referral, you won’t be able to claim a Medicare rebate.

If you’re unsure whether you need a referral, our admin team can help guide you through your options. You can find out how to get one here

Is telehealth psychology as effective as in-person treatment?

Yes — telehealth psychology can be just as effective as in-person therapy for a wide range of mental health concerns. Many clients find that online sessions are more flexible, accessible, and reduce the stress of travel or time off work.

Our psychologists adapt their approach to online sessions, maintaining strong therapeutic connection and delivering the same high standard of care.

What are the disadvantages of seeing a psychologist online?

While telehealth psychology works well for many people, there are a few potential downsides to consider:

  • You’ll need a private space and reliable internet connection

  • It can be harder to read body language on screen

  • Some clients prefer the energy of in-person interaction

  • It may not be suitable for high-risk or crisis situations

If you’re unsure whether telehealth is the right fit, we’re happy to talk it through and recommend the best option for your needs. For example, you may like to meet your psychologist face-to-face or in-person first, then move to online sessions when you feel comfortable.
