Maverick Ryan is a Psychologist in Brisbane at True North Psychology

Maverick Ryan

Provisional Psychologist

Maverick is an engaging and compassionate psychologist who provides a collaborative, strengths-based approach to therapy.

Maverick is available on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.

Maverick is a psychologist who takes a compassionate, collaborative, strengths-based approach to therapy. He enjoys helping clients translate insight into action so they can perform and feel their best.

With a background in sport and high-performance settings, Maverick draws on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to provide practical, evidence-based strategies that enhance performance and wellbeing, on the field, at work, and in everyday life.

His style is calm, practical and strengths focused. Sessions are structured and collaborative, with clear goals, targeted skills practice and between-session exercises to help clients track progress in training, competition, and daily life.

Maverick is currently accepting referrals for adolescents and adults and has a particular interest in working with clients aged 16 to 30. His areas of experience include:

  • Sport and performance: Supporting athletes and coaches with performance anxiety, attentional control, mental preparation, goal setting, leadership, injury rehabilitation and pre performance routines.

  • Adjustment to injury: Helping people navigate recovery and rebuild day to day function, study, work, and sport. Experience includes adjustment to injury counselling, pain management programs, and rehabilitation planning alongside physiotherapists.

  • Life stress and transitions: Assisting with work stress, career change, interpersonal challenges, and lifestyle shifts.

  • Anxiety disorders: Managing performance and social anxiety, phobias, generalised anxiety, and unhelpful worry.

  • Depression and mood: Working through low mood and loss of motivation, reconnecting with what matters and building momentum.

  • Health habits: Establishing sustainable routines for sleep, exercise, and nutrition.

Maverick is passionate about supporting his clients to perform at their best in whatever is most important to them. He believes psychology can build resilience and mental skills, not only when we are struggling, but proactively to support growth. In sessions, he collaborates with clients to set a clear plan and keep therapy aligned with their goals and values.

Maverick applies CBT and ACT to improve athlete performance and wellbeing. CBT strategies can be used to re-structure unhelpful thoughts outside of competition, clarify goals and strengthen pre and post-performance routines. ACT can help increase athlete psychological flexibility, using strategies to better notice pressure or distraction, return to the present, and shift attention to what matters. Together these approaches can enhance attentional control, pressure management, and mental preparation.

Across 2024 and 2025, Maverick supported Queensland Cricket (U16 to U19) and Volleyball Queensland (U13 to U18) state teams and the UQ Rugby Premier Colts team (U21). As program psychologist, he delivered team workshops, leadership programs, coach sessions, provided one on one consults and designed mental performance profiles for athletes. Maverick completed a Master of Psychology (Sport and Exercise) at The University of Queensland in 2025.

*Note - Maverick is currently a Provisional Psychologist awaiting general registration with AHPRA. If you are interested in working with Maverick, we are able to place you on his waitlist and expect to be booking appointments in January 2026.
