At True North Psychology, we offer comprehensive assessments and evidence-based support to help children, adolescents and adults embrace their unique ADHD traits.

What is
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition characterised by a range of experiences, including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These traits can vary widely among individuals, influencing how they interact with the world.

ADHD may be identified at any stage of life and symptoms may look different depending on the age group, context and environment:

  • Inattention: Challenges attending to detail, sustaining focus, following through on tasks, or organising activities. Often easily distracted or appears to not listen when directly spoken to. Poor time management. Difficulty completing tasks.

  • Hyperactivity and impulsivity: Some may feel a need to move frequently, restlessness, speak often, act spontaneously or make impulsive decisions. Internal restlessness when unable to move frequently. Seeking movement based activities or work roles.

Diagnosis, medication and psychological therapy for ADHD can assist you in improved functioning and quality of life.

Understanding ADHD as Neurodivergent

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, causing changes in the way you think and process information. Research suggests this is due to the unique chemistry and structure of the ADHD brain. Inattention and hyperactivity symptoms of ADHD may impact on the way you learn, work or behave. Not all symptoms are challenges, and an ADHD’er may find some symptoms to benefit them such as hyperfocus on a topic of interest.

Causes and Diagnosis

While the exact cause of ADHD is not fully understood, genetic and neurological factors play a significant role. ADHD is often diagnosed through comprehensive assessments, including clinical interviews, behavioural observations, and standardised questionnaires. It's important to note that ADHD traits can overlap with other conditions, necessitating a thorough evaluation by a psychologist or psychiatrist.

ADHD Testing and Diagnosis

True North Psychology can provide child and adult ADHD testing and diagnosis.

How Psychology Can Help People With ADHD

ADHD can be supported through various strategies:

  • Psychoeducation: ADHD education provides information on symptoms and their impacts, common difficulties and strengths in ADHD, contributing factors (i.e. stress), rights to reasonable adjustments at school/work, and support options.

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapies (CBT): use cognitive and/or behavioural interventions to minimise the day-to-day challenges experienced by ADHD’ers. This may include environmental modifications, behavioural modifications, psychological adjustments, and cognitive restructuring.  Mindfulness-Based Therapies teach individuals to stay present and manage their thoughts and emotions, reducing impulsivity and improving attention.

  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT): teaches skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Through these skills, DBT can help to target some of the common difficulties experienced by individuals with ADHD, including impulsivity, hyperactivity, and emotional dysregulation.

ADHD Medications

Medication can be an important part of the treatment plan for many individuals with ADHD. Medications are designed to help manage experiences such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity.

  • Stimulant Medications: These are the most commonly prescribed and work by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, which may help improve attention and focus for some people.

  • Non-Stimulant Medications: These can be effective for individuals who do not respond well to stimulants or who experience significant side effects.

Medication is often most effective when combined with other therapeutic approaches, such as CBT and skills-based therapy. Regular monitoring and adjustments by a psychiatrist ensures the best outcomes.

True North Psychology can not prescribe medications for ADHD. We can work in conjunction with your psychiatrist to ensure accurate diagnosis and timely intervention.
